Home / Food Retailing

The physical dimensions of supermarkets and grocery shops and the wide variety of products they sell require special lighting considerations. The groceries in a food store should feel appealing, tasteful and fresh. Shopping groceries is all about engaging senses.

Colour Temperature

The colour temperature of light is a main key to the feeling of the store, a warmer light can give a more homely feel while colder light can on the other hand give a more fresh or luxurious feel. The choice depends on which expression you want to give but a combination of colour temperatures can create a more dynamic and interesting store. Tunable luminaires offer the flexibility to change the colour temperature after the merchandise on display.

Lighting is a truly important tool when highlighting products and portraying the groceries in a favourable way. Luminance Systems lighting solutions can help you highlight your products and create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

Let's create an amazing store experience with focus on following key areas:

  • Bread & Pastries
  • Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
  • Meat Products
  • Fresh Fish
  • Refrigerators & Freezers

Bread & Pastries

Bread & Pastries

Larger supermarkets often have a very extensive bread section with several displays of both newly baked as well as pre-made breads. To accentuate the bread and bakery products, it is possible to use spotlights combined with general lighting with a warmer colour temperature of 2700K. It lends the crust an extra crispy, fresh look. Tracklights with interchangeable light distributions enable flexible adaptations.

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

Accent light is beneficial in this area. Choose spotlights and tracklights which are tailor-made for the fruit and vegetable section and are equipped with a LED module that is specifically selected and tested for illuminating such foods. Spotlights with warm coloured spectrum CCT 3000K is recommended.

By illuminating the vertical spaces with an integrated LED striplight will improve the overall impression and the sense of the place. The items will be illuminated in a better way and the merchandise gets good visibility and the aisles feel more welcoming.

Nevertheless not all vegetables react similarly to light. It is a good idea to provide high intensity light above lettuce and other leafy vegetables to emphasize the bright, green colours. While for light sensitive products such as those grow under the ground, e.g. potatoes, onions, asparagus, chicory and mushrooms, these products are best stored in darker conditions to prevent accelerated spoiling.

Red Meat

Meat Products

The color of meats is one of the main factors consumers use when determining the freshness and quality of the products in the grocery store or butcher shop. They are looking for a "fresh" color.

For red meat, it is best to choose light with a warm white colour 2700K to 3000K. This light highlights the freshness of meat products and look much more appetizing because warm white light contains more red shades. Cool white light, which contains more blue shades, would lend red meat the completely wrong colour as the meat would appear to be old under the wrong light.

Philips Premium White with CRI 90 versions come with high R9 value, deeply enhancing red colours of meat as well as red fish and seafood, such as salmon and shrimps.

Fresh Fish

Fresh Fish

When it comes to fish, we distinguish between white- and red-meat fish. White fish is displayed most advantageously under cool white light 4000K. With cool white light, plaice, cod and sole look super fresh. For red fish, such as tuna and salmon, a warmer colour temperature is more appropriate.

The goal is always to highlight and enhance the natural colour of the product. Tunable luminaires in which you can change colour temperature after displayed items and seasons are highly recommended.

Milk at supermarket

Refrigerators & Freezers

In dairy areas and places where refrigerators and freezers are installed it is beneficial to have a colder light, about 4000K. It applies to the senses that the area is cold enough, so that there are no feelings of the merchandise to melt.
